List of Sources Used for the Graf & Grislawski Book

The book Graf & Grislawski: A Pair of Aces is the result of many years of painstaking research into a multitude of sources, both written and oral, both published and unpublished. Many of the unpublished written sources have been obtained from other sources than official archives, such as private sources. Since the book was written in close co-operation with Mr. Alfred Grislawski during the course of almost five years, much is based on his oral story. Likewise, much valuable material has been obtained through interviews with many people who knew Graf & Grislawski. As far as possible, their statements have been cross-checked against written sources. Below follows a listing of our main sources. For the sake of readability, we have chosen not to litter the narrative with chapter notes (but on the other hand, to our knowledge there is no similar pilot biography that has the narrative littered with chapter notes). We are convinced that the interested researcher still will be able to find out the source references through our list of sources below--which also is published on pages 303 - 305 in the Graf & Grislawski book. Any interested researcher who still is unable to find the source reference to a particular detail in the book, is encouraged to contact the authors directly, see Main Page .

Acknowledgments

This book could not have been written without the generous help and assistance that has been kindly provided by several aviation veterans:

Generalleutnant Gerhard Barkhorn (Luftwaffe); Oberleutnant Johannes Broschwitz (Luftwaffe); Edgar C. Burford (USAAF); Generalleutnant Adolf Galland (Luftwaffe); Robert Goebel (USAAF); Oberst Gordon M. Gollob (Luftwaffe); Oberst Erich Hartmann (Luftwaffe); Oberfeldwebel Werner Hohenberg (Luftwaffe); Leutnant Berthold K. Jochim (Luftwaffe); Wing Commander James E. Johnson (RAF); Sergeant Glenn H. Jonston (USAAF); General-Leytenant Arkadiy Fyodorovich Kovachevich (VVS); Staff Sergeant Harvey Kreitzman (USAAF); Starshina Vasiliy Vasil'evich Kurayev (VVS); Polkovnik Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Pavlichenko (VVS); Leutnant Viktor Petermann (Luftwaffe); Generalleutnant Günther Rall (Luftwaffe); Leutnant Edmund Rossmann (Luftwaffe); Oberleutnant Kurt Schade (Luftwaffe); General Johannes Steinhoff (Luftwaffe); Generalleutnant Hannes Trautloft (Luftwaffe).

In addition, an untiring and most valuable assistance has been provided by a number of fellow researchers, historians, and enthusiasts. First of all, this book would never have come about without the tremendous and untiring support that we have received from Mr. Alfred Grislawski throughout the past years. Mr. Grislawski's wife, Mrs. Ilse Grislawski, also has provided us with much of her memories, and the couple's son, Mr. Jürgen Grislawski, has provided us with a fantastic support. A completely invaluable support has also been provided by Mrs. Helga Graf.
We owe deep gratitude to Mr. Manfred Wägenbaur/JG 52 Traditionsgemeinschaft for an unwavering support to make this book become a reality. Mr. Donald Pearson and Mr. Andrew-Johannes Matthews have provided us with much information from their research into RLM victory rolls, and Mr. Matti Salonen has generously provided us with material from his research into Luftwaffe loss files, which has been a great help to supplement our own research into these fields. Mr. Frank Olynyk has supported our work with material from microfilmed USAAF combat reports, and it is due to his work that the details surrounding Alfred Grislawski's last combat could be established. Mr. James Lewis has forwarded the contact to Mr. Glenn H. Johnston and Mr. Harvey Kreitzman, both of the 95 BG bomber crew that was shot down by Alfred Grislawski in January 1944. Other helpers, to whom we owe deep gratitude, are:

Alfons Altmeier, Aleksey V. Andreev, Sergey V. Andreev, Bernd Barbas, Holger Benecke, Kjell Bergström, Lars-Eric Bergström, Dénes Bernád, Jan Bobek, Frédéric Bruyelle, Sven Carlsen, Eddie Creek, Andrey Dikov (Korytov), Jean Pierre Duriez, Russell Guest, Damian Hallor, Peter Hallor, Bertrand Hugot, Marko Jeras, Sharon Johnston, Dmitriy Karlenko, Kelly Kreitzman, Viktor Kulikov, Britta Lindberg, John Manrho, Raimo Malkamäki, Paul McMillan, George Mellinger, Andrey Mikhailov, Eric Mombeek, Jim Perry, Gennadiy Petrov, Stéphane Pichard, Dr. Jochen Prien, Günther Rosipal, Francois Rude, Karim Sakket, Carlo Sansilvestri, Juan Carlos Salgado, Pär Salomonson, Reinhard Schröder, Hans Dieter Seidl, Hans E. To any helpers whose names we may have missed, please accept our apologies and our implied gratitude.
